The first day at PAX was a blast. It was my first real game convention and I will happily admit I was overwhelmed. There were cos players, more demos than you can imagine, lines longer than most city blocks and gaming industry celebs who were as down to earth as anyone could want.
My day one highlights included:
Meeting Margaret Weis, half of the famous duo responsible for framing many folks first literary exploration into the fantasy genre via the Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends series. I also plan to interview Margaret about her newest endeavor in gaming circles with drivethrurpg.com. Look for that in the coming days.
Seeing the Gamers with Jobs panel on what it means to be an older gamer. Guests included Jeff Green of Pop Cap games and Ken Levine of Bioshock fame. Alot of great information and some very salient points were made regarding what games we choose to play as we get older as well as what the catalysts were for the panel to start them on their careers in game design and journalism.
Bumping into Ryan Davis and Drew Scanlon of Giant Bomb. These guys continue to impress and drive us here at LGOD because they are so accomodating and so open and friendly. They had no problem stopping their setup for recording a video and chatting with us for a few minutes as well as taking a group picture to please us loyal fans. Our whole team is looking forward to their panel tonight and perhaps a pub crawl afterwards. Shenanigans will be afoot.
Airmech... I had heard a few bits and pieces about this game but once I had a chance to actually play it I had a blast. It is a multiplayer focused game with gameplay similar to DOTA or League of Legends. You control a mech that gains levels and money as you defend your base and attack your enemies in an effort to take down your opponents base. You can deploy units from your base which can be left to simply defend your base or can be airlifted by your mech when in flying vehicle form to be dropped near your opponents base. The game looked and felt great and is available now for Chrome. It is coming soon for Steam and the developers hope to release on XBLA as well.
I plan to bring you more awesome gaming goodness. Keep checking back for the rest of our team's coverage as PAX Easter 2012 rages on. And on.
