MSNBC reports that a Democratic candidate for state senate in Maine is being attacked by the Repbulican Party for being a World of Warcraft player.
On a website called "Colleen's World," the headline reads "Colleen Lachowicz is a Democrat candidate for Maine State Senate. In Colleen’s online fantasy world, she gets away with crude, vicious and violent comments like the ones below. Maine needs a State Senator that lives in the real world, not in Colleen’s fantasy world." The site then catalogues all commentary made by Lachowicz on public forums such as Daily KOS and World of Warcraft Forums.
The footer of the page states that it is paid for by the Maine Republican Party. Registration information via WHOIS states that the site was registered September 30 through GoDaddy and has made registration information private. An article on the Maine GOP website (currently unavailable, probably because it's being DDOS'ed into the stone age) accuses Lachowicz of leading a "bizarre double life"
To her credit, Lachowicz has attempted to remain sanguine about the attack. “I think it's weird that I'm being targeted for playing online games. Apparently I'm in good company since there are 183 million other Americans who also enjoy online games. What's next? Will I be ostracized for playing Angry Birds or Words with Friends? If so, guilty as charged!"
It is this kind of demonization that gamers still have to fight, even when gaming has become a $25B industry. I hope that Maine voters will refuse to endorse these kinds of attacks and realize that gaming is just another past time with benefits and drawbacks.
