The SSX franchise returns for its sixth installment, bringing a blend of old and new in hopes to please old fans and also to bring in a new audience. This installment originally planned to have a more ‘extreme’ race mode where the racers would be battling down the mountains in a Road Rash, no holds barred style. That feature, and the subtitle “Deadly Descents”, was scrapped for a more globalized time challenge system using the now popular AutoLog for racing against the clock and scoring leaderboards. The courses which were directly modeled after real world locations, with tweaks to make them more enjoyable and playable, are extremely intense and can be as much about survival as getting a high score. As tends to happen, some folks on the Internet have played this game and would like you to know what they think.
Alex at Giant Bomb gets all goofy foot (4/5): “EA's latest SSX game is, at once, a nostalgia piece aimed at recapturing the attention of old franchise fans that have wandered astray, and something of a series reboot, mixing in a host of new bells and whistles...”
Ben Gilbert at Joystiq is no butt dragger (3.5/5): “From a mechanical perspective, it's the best treatment the "extreme sports" genre has received on the current generation of systems thus far.”
Jordan Devore at Destructoid is totally stoked: “Most of what made the series so enjoyable has either been left untouched or tweaked slightly, so fans should dig what's being offered here. The online functionality in particular stands out as a wonderful addition.”
