Square-Enix teaser is a World Ends With You iOS port

Ok Square-Enix.  You win.  I have admitted defeat.  I have been posting on LGOD a while now interpreting Square-Enix’s many nods to and inclusions of the The World Ends With You (TWEWY) in teasers, games, you name it, as a symbol of a sequel in the works .  However, the teaser trailer posted by Square-Enix , which many fans waited a week to see what was going to be revealed, is nothing more than an announcement for a iOS port of TWEWY called “The World Ends With You: Solo Remix”.  Probably the biggest disappointment of 2012… well ok this and Mass Effect 3’s ending.

The game is available starting today for iPad (2 or greater) and iPhone (4 or greater) .  It will cost $17.99 for iPhone and $19.99 for iPad and will contain HD visuals and will remove the second screen gameplay that was in the DS game and you will control Neku and his partner on one screen.  Now read on if you want to know why teasing a port is not the best choice for Square-Enix.

Now, don’t get me wrong Internet.  I’m not upset that this game is being shared with an audience that may not have had a chance to play the original on DS.  I’m upset because you don’t tease the community countless times with reference , after reference , after reference to TWEWY and not make a sequel.  Not cool Square-Enix… not cool at all.  It’s one thing if there was no build up for this teaser, but every day they would change the music selection to get the anticipation levels higher and higher.  Then out of nowhere, during the countdown, someone finds a reference on the page to an iOS version and people now know an iOS port was coming.

That’s something Square-Enix tried to squash as soon as it was leaked.  They removed the references and the lead translator of TWEWY, Brian Gray, took to Twitter to post, “Before everyone decides the #twewy countdown is over, they might want to wait for the countdown to be over. #moredripthanleak”.  Now ok, that’s cool.  So the surprise may have been spoiled that we were getting an iOS port and some new songs (based on the album store link leak) but at least us fans begging for a sequel might still have a chance based on Gray’s comments.

But guess what?  THAT WAS THE ENTIRE ANNOUNCEMENT .  The countdown is done, we see the result and it is exactly what was leaked beforehand .  So what’s the deal then?  Is Brian Gray just doing damage control and posting on Twitter for the sake of posting?  Is there really something else to look forward to?  The countdown is over and I see a page for an iOS port and an album.  What else is there Brian Gray / Square-Enix?  I’m pretty sure the Twitter post is nothing but a cruel lie and Square-Enix is testing the waters further with this iOS port to see if there is still an audience for this game.  The problem is Square-Enix can’t seem to figure out that people with iPhones and iPads don’t spend $20 on games on old games.  It will be a pretty bad test if this game selling on iOS is the key to them making a sequel.

Square-Enix, the way your company and lead translator handled this teaser is the same way you guys have been handling Final Fantasy as of late.  Get your acts together and do some real damage control by releasing a REAL sequel and correct this disappointment.  Won’t someone think of the children… I mean the true TWEWY fans?
