You may have heard of the new Lord of the Rings LEGOs coming out this summer.  If you haven't, well this should be awesome news to you if you're a LOTR / LEGO fan.  Not many pictures of the LEGOs are available yet, but if you're looking for some fairly hi-res pictures of the character mini figures check out this site.  Some of the sets are being shown at TheOneRing.net from Toy Fare 2012.  I'm personally most excited for Helm's Deep and the Mines of Moria.

I’ve been watching a lot of Angry Video Game Nerd lately, and if you don’t know who that is feel free to check him out at Cinemassacre.com (he swears a lot, be warned).  After watching him play a bunch of crappy games, I’ve been thinking about the past and my own experiences with NES games while growing up.  Come join me on a trip down memory lane if you feel inclined.

For those that don't know, not only am I a huge Nintendo fan but I'm an even bigger Disney fan.  Just announced on Disney's blog was a new Avatar-themed land for Disney's Animal Kingdom.  Could this be Disney's answer to Harry Potter world at Universal?  Probably not but I'm still excited and let me explain why...

An art installation at the Parisian art gallery Centquarte called "Waste Landscape" will feature 65,000 unsold CD's. The discs are sewn together by hand and then blanketed over the floor of the gallery like sand dunes. Don't worry about the waste, however - after the installation is over the CD's will be recycled.

I'm a huge fan of mashups, and I've featured a few stories about some of my favorites here.

One of my favorite mashup artists, Kutiman, recently put together a mashup of various performances of the Led Zeppelin classic, "Black Dog." One of the amazing things about this is how seemlessly all the songs flow together, even more than the Radiohead "Paranoid Android" mashup I posted before. I think it's a great tribute to how enduring a rock song can be, and how many people out there love music and want to share their love with others.

Swissmiss put us on to a great site created by Adam Parks called The Illuminated Mixtapes.

Parks uses some elegant design to riff on the old classic of the mixtape.  He has the mixes laid out by tempo: adagio, moderato, allegro, presto, just like a symphony.  Parks has some pretty good taste in music and I've already purchased some tunes based on his choices.

In my mind, there are two universities in the United States that are at the pinnacle of "cool engineering:" MIT and CalTech.  Since MIT is in our backyard, we're naturally a little biased to the great school on Massachusetts Avenue.

CNET has a great article about research work being done at MIT to determine whether nuclear fusion can be a viable energy source. Fusion got discredited in the 90's due to a bogus announcement of cold fusion, but researchers at MIT are looking into the classic high-energy "hot" fusion method.  While the barriers to entry seem insurmountable, the potential benefits are world-changing, and it's my belief that if anyone can make it work, it's MIT engineers.

We totally love Lego, in case you didn't already know.  Ars Technica has a story about how Lego fan Kevin Walter built a 50,000-brick replica of the tower of Barad-dur (the home of Sauron) from The Lord of the Rings. While most large-scale Lego projects use a software program to plan construction, Walter only used film and a Weta tower replica as his guide.  Unfortunately after the tower was complete and he won a competition, Walter dismantled the tower as it contained most of his piece collection that he needed for future projects.
