Courtesy of Granite State Geek, we found out about a Forbes article about calculating the value of Smaug's hoard.

Forbes has for several years published the Fictional 15, an imagining of what the value in the real-world would be of the vast riches some fictional characters have.   Columnist Michael Noer decided to offer a peek behind the curtain and outline how he comes up with his valuations.  It's a fun read, because Noer isn't pulling random numbers out of a hat but actually putting some work into his column.
