Many years have passed since the release of Doom 3 and id Software has spent that time evolving their storytelling and expanding on “Run and shoot! It’s dark, look out!”. With Rage id has stepped up its level of immersion and fleshed out a great game with an interesting story and a ton of content including mini-games and more to make the wait worth it. In my opinion anyway...
It isn’t blowing any critics away with a perfect score, but it is delivering on the promise of offering amazing animations, fun combat and a solid FPS experience for some. For better or worse, it is borrowing from many of the recent blockbuster hits for palette, art style and loot systems. That should make it either a must buy or a must avoid, but check the reviews below to see what the reviewers think.
Jim Sterling at destructoid rages (7/10): “By no means is RAGE not worth your time -- it looks stunning, the combat on both wheels and foot is fun, and there's a tremendous sense of atmosphere that deserves to be experienced.”
Brad Shoemaker at Giant Bomb thinks (4/5): “Rage won't set new standards for game design, but if you want to drive and shoot in an incredible-looking wasteland, this is your game.”
Ben Kuchera at Ars Technica goes into a RAGE Frenzy (Skip): “None of the game's ideas are thought out or fully explored, so the game feels like a series of dead ends in a world that is hard to care about, in which you play a bland character doing boring things against stock enemies using weak guns.”
Arthur Gies at Joystiq sets the record straight(3/5): “In fact, it's easiest to tell you what RAGE isn't right away. It's nothing like Fallout 3. It's nothing like Borderlands. It's not an RPG, though Id and Bethesda have used RPG terminology in describing it. It's not much of an open world. It's not very big. It's not very long.”
