English college student Anthony Rosner has made a documentary short "IRL" that details the depth to which World of Warcraft became a part of his life. Rosner played WoW so much (and became involved in guild leadership) that he took a year off from college and stopped spending time with friends in the real world. The documentary however ends on a positive note - Rosner eventually realized that his energies were better focused elsewhere and has since started going to the gym, focusing on his studies and working as a DJ. Everything in balance, folks.

WoWInsider recently talked with Marthazon, who is a 70-year-old grandmother, who is the GM of her raiding guild Spartans on the Dalaran server.
The interview does a great job of exploding a lot of the myths about what the definition of a "typical gamer" is. Marthazon has been playing World of Warcraft since 2005, when she was introduced to it by her daughter. Marthazon has a love of fantasy (reading The Lord of the Rings to her children before bed) and WoW was a perfect fit for her. Marthazon's 72-year-old husband also plays, mainly playing the Auction House to help the guild stay wealthy.
I hope that when I'm 70 I am still gaming on the NexusXboxStation9000 or whatever's out in 2040.

I was fortunate enough to get an invitation to two weekend beta play opportunities for Star Wars: The Old Republic (TOR). I have to admit I think I shrieked like a twelve-year-old schoolgirl when I got the first invitation. I wanted to pass along some of my impressions of the game.

Massively reports that the open beta tests for customers who pre-ordered Star Wars: The Old Republic topped over two million users, including 750,000 unique testers on the Thanksgiving weekend test. Over that holiday weekend, people played an average of 12 hours of gameplay.
Customers who pre-ordered SW:TOR will have early access to the game, and can download the client now to get ready. People will then be granted early access depending on when they pre-ordered, as early as December 15th.
Justin and I have both participated in the beta (I shrieked like a schoolgirl when I got my invite) and hope to post our impressions over the weekend.

I love a good arcade racer. Over this generation of consoles, a good racer has been extremely hard to find. It certainly can’t help that Criterion set the bar so high with Burnout: Paradise and Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit. Little did I know there was a crazy racing revolution happening on the PC in a niche title (at least here in the US) called Track Mania. That niche title has since morphed into Track Mania 2: Canyon.

At Blizzcon 2011, Blizzard Entertainment announced the next expansion for World of Warcraft, entitled "The Mists of Pandaria."

Blizzard has announced that, thanks to a recent hardware upgrade, it has a bunch of used servers that it will be auctioning off for charity. The auction will benefit St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital. The servers are HP p-Class blades, and will come marked with the World of Warcraft logo and a plaque containing the server's usage date and signatures of the development team. The auction store can be searched by realm.

Multiple news sources are reporting that players of a protein-folding game Foldit have broken a decade-long problem in creating a replica of the simian AIDS virus. What's even more compelling is that they completed this task in three weeks.
