reckoning

If you want a little something extra in your typical midnight game launch, head over to the GameStop in Bellingham, MA tonight.  38 Studios founder Curt Schilling and Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning head writer R.A. Salvatore will be appearing in person to meet gamers purchasing copies of Amalur.

Meanwhile, Todd McFarlane will be appearing in Tempe, AZ and lead designer Ken Rolston and other Big Huge games developers will be appearing in Cockeysville, MD.

After this weekend's depressing SuperBowl loss (sorry, Murph) it might be good to meet with a champion.

You may remember a little while back that Capcom was cancelling Mega Man games like it was going out of style, when the creator of Mega Man, Keiji Inafune, left Capcom.  Mega Man fans were wondering if the 8-bit wonder would ever be returning to a video game again or if this was indeed the end.  Well, most fans never thought they would see their beloved hero end up like this...

Last month Murph wrote about trying to sort out pre-order bonuses and collector's editions on games.  Rock Paper Shotgun wades into the fray in an examination of the various upcoming special editions for Assassin's Creed: Revelations.

One of the most puzzling facts about the vast array of special editions available is that there is no way for a completist to get one edition that offers everything that is available.  That makes the cynical me say that the release strategy is designed that way to ensure that people buy multiple copies of the game.

I don't begrudge game developers who want to provide a value-add for customers who are huge fans of a particular franchise.  People love having a physical representation of the game they spend so much time in, or having something rare that few others have.  My main concern is when things start getting ridiculous it just ends up turning people off.  I have a sneaking suspicion that the various pre-order bonuses, DLC perks, and the like come out of the marketing department rather than the minds and souls of the people developing the game.

According to a recent SW:TOR board post, if you pre-ordered Star Wars: The Old Republic, you'll get up to five days of advance access before the crowds start to jump in on launch day (December 20).  This will provide a tempting pre-order bonus as well as allow BioWare to test its servers before launch.  BioWare states that the access "is staggered over five days to ensure a quality experience for players at launch."  Hopefully this will allow BioWare to iron out the wrinkles and limit interruptions when the game officially launches.

GTA was officially announced recently on RockStar's website.  If you're looking for a first peek at this brand new game, the trailer is being shown today (in 4 hours from now according to the countdown clock).  You can view the trailer when it goes live here: RockStar's website.  Let's hope the site doesn't crash from all the web traffic it will be getting.  No details are known about the game but there are rumors that GTA V will be download-only and also available for WiiU.

Bioware has irritated people who requested to be beta testers for Star Wars: The Old Republic by sending them an email intended for actual beta testers.  As happens on the internet, much rage broke out over this.  Bioware apologized on its official forums for the error, and community manager Stephen Reid said on Twitter "Those responsible will endure a thousand years in the Sarlacc Pit."

While this certainly is a cruel joke for anyone hoping to be a beta tester (I know I would have been fuming had I gotten this email in error), I'm willing to give BioWare a pass on this as we do have an official release date and it's not that far away.

Sadly I didn't get an invite to the Diablo III closed beta... which is probably good as I don't know if I can afford any sleepless nights right now but IGN has us covered.  They have a full walkthrough which I am currently drooling over and the game is looking amazing.  Check out the coverage over here.

If you're as big a fan of the Diablo series as I am, the release of Diablo III cannot come soon enough.  For those of you who want to get a jump start, Blizzard was kind enough to give you a skill calculator to experiment with.  It's a good way to see what skills will be available and how they will all co-exist together.  Obviously it isn't a replacement for playing the game and testing the skills out, but it's simple mindless fun and I'm excited to see what the classes have to offer.  Enjoy!
