While Bungie Interactive has stated it will no longer be making Halo games, that doesn't mean that Microsoft has the same outlook.
Joystiq was able to confirm that the original Halo: Combat Evolved will be remade by Saber Interactive using new graphic assets and a new game engine. The game will also apparently feature online multiplayer (the orginal Halo only had splitscreen local multiplayer).
I have mixed opinions about this. I would be very surprised if a remake of Halo did not sell extremely well - Halo continues to be a treasured franchise in the XBox universe. On the other hand, I always feel like it's intellectual laziness to perform a remake of an existing game/story rather than creating a new story. As the game gets closer to release date, the buzz around it (or lack thereof) should be an indicator of how the game will ultimately be received.
