google-facebook-elliott-schrage

Wired is reporting on an inept attempt on the part of Facebook to create a negative PR campaign painting Google as a violator of its users' privacy.  I'm sure the irony of the above statement isn't lost on anyone.

The program was a two-pronged approach - weaken Google's image and deflect attention from Facebook which has raised the ire of its users and the tech media over numerous changes and failures in its privacy policies.

Unfortunately the execution of this program involved PR reps pitching the story to various journalists without revealing their client - apparently a huge no-no in the reporting world.

There has been rapid backpedaling on this story from all concerned, but it's not surprising that Facebook once again has executed poorly on issues related to user privacy.
