Microsoft development team has unofficially announced that Kinect will officially be a Windows supported device in 2012, with Windows + Kinect. That is about as smart a move as I have seen from them recently and I am stoked to see where it actually goes.

Ah, the inside of a PC case.  A place of horror, where a million surfaces collect a billion dust particles that rob your computer of power.

MSI is trying to do its part to fight the war on dust with the Lightning Extreme GTX580.  When a PC first powers up, the graphics card's fans run in reverse at high speeds for 30 seconds, blasting dust off the fans' fins before returning to normal operation when the PC has booted.  A great idea - imagine if all the fans in your case did this?

RazerBlade

Razer's "PC Gaming is not dead" campaign ended today with the announcement of the Razer Blade, a $2800 gaming laptop featuring a multitouch LCD display screen beside the regular keyboard called the Switchblade UI.  The screen can display game information if an external mouse is being used or function as an input device on its own.  The laptop also boasts a 17" high-definition LED display.  Full specs are listed at the end of the article.

It seems a bit presumptuous on Razer's part to declare themselves the savior of PC gaming with a 17" laptop, fancy keyboard notwithstanding.  While the Blade's specs are nothing to sneeze at, a PC builder with $2800 at their disposal (knocking off the costs of an LED monitor and the fancy keyboard) could build a far more powerful gaming PC.  I'm unclear what kind of a demand there is for a portable powerful gaming device - the college crowd?  The Blade doesn't even feature an SSD as its hard drive.  This is definitely a niche product, and I don't even know if Razer will sell enough of these to break even on its costs.

If you're into case porn as much as me, then you should enjoy this gallery of case images from the latest Quake-Con Bring Your Own Computer room.  While most of the images are on the dark side (who wants to frag in bright conditions?) some of the photos capture some pretty amazing rigs.

When Mike Schropp wanted to build himself a new folding machine, he turned to Lego for the case.

The machine has three motherboards running i7 processors, all powered by a 1200 watt PSU.

In Schropp's article he states "With every project I do I always invariably arrive at the same point, 'Can I use Legos?' "  We should all ask ourselves the same question, Mike.

JamesGips-199x300

One of the panels we attended at PAXEast this year concerned what it was like for people with disabilities to try to enjoy gaming, or even use computers in the way the rest of us take for granted.  It was definitely an eye-opening experience and made my wonder why some peripheral manufacturers who make oodles of money on ridiculous items can't put some money into research and development to serve the special needs community.

Boston Innovation wrote up a story on Boston College professor James Gips and his work on creating devices that make computing more accessible to people with severe disabilities.  Gips has created two tools, Eagle Eyes, and Camera Mouse, which enable paralyzed people to use either eye or head movements to move a computer mouse.

I really wish that some of the brain power that goes into developing yet another social media app could be directed towards helping the disabled be less isolated, both from a social and technological standpoint.  It's the innovation of people like Gips that really makes the promise of technology live up to the potential to change peoples' lives.

Hey everyone just wanted to say a quick blurb that I haven't been posting a lot because I decided to take the plunge and set up Ubuntu server at home for the file sharing needs of the LGOD Nashua headquarters.  I'll post some updates once everything is up and running to let you know what we're doing.

Welcome to 2010.  There is a decade between us and the 90's.  Your PC has grown up and has developed a rather intimate relationship with the Internet.  This is pretty much unavoidable these days and abstinence is not a realistic option.  Seeing as the Internet is here to stay, I would like to have a brief chat with you about protection...PC security protection that is.  I hear some of you saying that you have that covered already, that you understand the importance of antivirus software and you make sure that yours is updated and legitimate. Great, you can move on if you want.  However, if you don't have antivirus software on your PC or you let it expire/get outdated due to not wanting to pay the money for it (or some other reason), I have two things to say to you...
