Welcome to 2010.  There is a decade between us and the 90's.  Your PC has grown up and has developed a rather intimate relationship with the Internet.  This is pretty much unavoidable these days and abstinence is not a realistic option.  Seeing as the Internet is here to stay, I would like to have a brief chat with you about protection...PC security protection that is.  I hear some of you saying that you have that covered already, that you understand the importance of antivirus software and you make sure that yours is updated and legitimate. Great, you can move on if you want.  However, if you don't have antivirus software on your PC or you let it expire/get outdated due to not wanting to pay the money for it (or some other reason), I have two things to say to you...

Shame on you. You know who you are. Not only are you putting your property and personal information (and possibly that of those close to you) at risk, you are allowing your PC to act as a veritable Petri dish of potential virus and malware breeding and propagation. You run the risk of allowing someone to damage your property and even your personal life. Just because your PC has not crashed or taken on the semblance of Regan MacNeil does not mean that you are free of infection. Gone are the days when PC infections were mostly straight forward and specific. Things have gotten far more complex and elusive.

Repent. Go out there and get some antivirus software. And DO NOT shop PC security software by looking solely at the lowest cost. This is not a healthy way to go about it. There are lots of crappy and fake antivirus software out there. My recommendation is to keep it simple. Stick to the name brands: Norton, McAfee, and Trend. With these companies, you generally get what you pay for…a good and solid product. If you still refuse to pay for protecting what is valuable to you, Microsoft has a free antivirus software that has gotten mixed but mostly decent reviews. The important thing here is to get some protection on your PC ASAP.

I am sure that there are several people out there who have something against these companies and/or use a product not listed in this article, one that they swear by. Kudos to those guys! My point is that a PC without protection or with outdated protection is a disaster waiting to happen and fixing it does not need to be a painful process. So what are you waiting for?
